Google denies reverse-engineering Vista

TECHNOLOGY:
The source code for Google's Chrome browser gave the impression that the company had reverse-engineered Windows Vista to employ a useful security feature, but the company said it didn't in fact do so.

The Chrome source code said a particular security feature available on Vista, Data Execution Prevention, can be used on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1, though it's not documented for the older operating systems. The source code also said the feature can be understood with a disassembler, a method of reverse-engineering that deconstructs a binary file--such as Windows--into instructions more easily understood by a human.
An explanatory comment in the Chrome source code mentions use of a disassembler to figure out the security feature. "Completely undocumented from Microsoft. You can find this information by disassembling Vista's SP1 kernel32.dll with your favorite disassembler," the comment says.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers, of Corvallis, Oregon, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.
For example, an observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello," but with "Ahoy, me hearty!" The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

End of world? Experiment to recreate Big Bang underway

The Big Bang Theory is the dominant scientific theory about the origin of the universe. According to the big bang, the universe was created sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter and in all directions.

Scientists in Geneva on Wednesday launched preliminary experiments to test the Big Bang theory of the universe's origins and other beliefs about how matter and mass formed.

For the tests, engineers built a giant contraption called the Large Hadron Collider. The unit is designed to smash sub-atomic particles into each other at extremely high speeds. They hope to use the LHC to crash protons into each other and create events that are similar to those that supposedly occurred when the universe formed.

The process aims to test the Big Bang theory and the belief that the Higgs boson particle—the so-called God particle--is the origin of matter and mass. It could also provide evidence of dark matter, or invisible matter in between galaxies.

Ike gains strength over Gulf, heading towards Texas

Hurricane Ike is gaining strength as it slowly makes its way into the Gulf of Mexico, on a path toward the southern U.S. state of Texas.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Ike's center was in the waters off the coast of western Cuba this Wednesday morning. Forecasters say it was traveling at a speed of 13 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers an hour.

On its current path, Ike could reach the coast of Texas early Saturday.

Authorities in Texas have begun making preparations. Governor Rick Perry has declared 88 coastal counties disaster areas, and several towns in the region have been told to prepare for a mandatory evacuation.

Oil companies have begun evacuating workers from their offshore drilling platforms.

Forecasters say Ike still is producing strong tropical storm conditions in western Cuba. It could dump as much as 50 centimeters of rain before leaving the area, and could cause life-threatening floods and mudslides.

The storm first made landfall on Cuba on Sunday, killing at least four people and forcing more than one million people to evacuate. Ike struck Cuba again on Tuesday, sending debris flying through the streets and soaking the capital, Havana, with heavy rain.

Ike also caused flooding in Haiti that killed about 70 people, adding to an estimated toll of 500 people killed by storms in recent weeks.

Microsoft closing it's owned studio : ENSEMBLE

Microsoft would be closing its internal developer Ensemble Studios upon the completion of sci-fi real-time strategy game Halo Wars. In a statement issued today, Microsoft confirmed that Ensemble will be shut down once the Xbox 360-exclusive RTS set in the best-selling Halo franchise ships out early next year.

"The team at Ensemble has made invaluable contributions to the games industry with their Age of Empires and Age of Mythology games and with the highly anticipated release of Halo Wars. This decision does not reflect at all on Ensemble’s talent or the quality of Halo Wars--in fact, many people who have had a chance to test drive Halo Wars agree that it is on track to being a fantastic game."

Though Microsoft will close the studio, Ensemble brass plan to soldier on. As part of today's statement, Microsoft said that Ensemble's "leadership team" will form a new development house, and has already entered into an agreement with the publisher to continue supporting Halo Wars post-launch, "as well as work on other projects with Microsoft Game Studios."

Commenting on the reason for the closure, Microsoft said, "This was a fiscally rooted decision that keeps MGS on its growth path. While the decision to dissolve Ensemble was not an easy one, Microsoft is working to place as many Ensemble employees who do not move to the newly formed studio into open positions within Microsoft as possible."

As noted earlier today, the Age of Empires brand has sold more than 20 million units since the first installment debuted on the PC in 1997. According to the NPD Group, Ages of Empires III for the PC has sold 1.15 million units in the US alone through July 2008, with The Warchiefs expansion tallying nearly 305,000 more.

iPod touch...watch videos, listen music, surf with touch of finger

iPod touch is a reality after all. While we initially assumed that Mr. Jobs wouldn't be so kind as to bless us all with two new full-fledged iPods in a single day, we're elated that he had other ideas. The new flagship iPod has "the same size screen as the iPhone, but it's even thinner" (eight-millimeters, for those taking notes), and it also touts the "same multi-touch interface" found on the firm's handset. Additionally, it boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display, the ability to "flick through your photos," and you even get the "slide to unlock" feature, too.

As for battery life, the touch is said to last 22-hours when playing back audio and 5-hours when watching video. The iPod touch will be arriving in 8GB and 16GB flavors and will be priced at $299 and $399, respectively.

Google Chrome.... New Web Browser from Google

Two days back Google released the beta version of a new open source browser: Google Chrome

I was very curious about it so I searched about it and found that it's simply amazing.
When you think about any google application, you expect that they will give you something which will be really usefull to you and which will make your life easy.
I was trying to get the thinking process of google Developers while they were working on Google Chrome.
What google developers thought that people are spending an increasing amount of time online, and they're doing things never imagined when the web first appeared about 15 years ago. so they started building the web browser from from the scratch.

It may sound that Google has paid me for this review :D, but I really like this browser.
Following points make it different from other web browsers:

New Tab Page: Every time you open a new tab, you'll see a visual sampling of your most visited sites, most used search engines, and recently bookmarked pages and closed tabs

Application shotcuts: Use web apps without opening your browser. Application shortcuts can directly load your favorite online apps

Dynamic Tab: You can drag tabs out of the browser to create new windows, gather multiple tabs into one window or arrange your tabs however you wish -- quickly and easily.

Crash COntrol : Every tab you're using is run independently in the browser, so if one app crashes it won't take anything else down

Incognito mode: Don't want pages you visit to show up in your web history? Choose incognito mode for private browsing

Safe Browsing: Google Chrome warns you if you're about to visit a suspected phishing, malware or otherwise unsafe website

Simpler Downloads: No intrusive download manager; you see your download's status at the bottom of your current window

All in all, try to get feel of it. You will surely like it :-)
